Dr. Tim Frazier: Director

Dr. Tim Frazier is a Professor, Senior Administrator, and Faculty Director of the Emergency and Disaster Management Program at Georgetown University. He also serves as the Director of the Scholarship Program. He holds a B.A. in Geography from the University of Tennessee and an M.S. and Ph.D. in Geography from Pennsylvania State University, specializing in Human/Environment Interaction. His research focuses on community resilience, vulnerability, and adaptation to climate change and natural hazards, using GIS-based modeling and stakeholder engagement to inform decision-making. Dr. Frazier is recognized as an expert in coastal hazards, risk assessment, and the use of geospatial analysis for disaster mitigation.

Objective

To establish a scholarship program dedicated to providing educational opportunities for individuals living in refugee camps and those significantly impacted by social determinants of health. This initiative aims to reduce the educational gap, foster skill development, and empower recipients to pursue their aspirations despite facing adversity.

Program Overview

The “Empowering Futures Scholarship” will be open to candidates who demonstrate resilience, academic potential, and a strong desire to contribute positively to their communities. By supporting these individuals, the program seeks to uplift those who are most vulnerable and catalyze meaningful change within refugee populations and socially disadvantaged groups.

Eligibility Criteria

  1. Applicants must reside in a recognized refugee camp or be affected by significant
    social determinants of health such as poverty, inadequate housing, or limited access
    to education.
  2. Candidates should be aged between 15 and 25.
  3. Demonstrated financial need through a financial assessment.
  4. Willingness and ability to mobilize or establish residence in a different country if
    necessary for educational opportunities.
  5. Submission of a personal statement discussing how the scholarship would impact their
    future, their vision for their education and career, and how they plan to contribute
    to their community.

Application Process

  1. Initial Application: Submission of a form including personal
    information, educational
    background, and a personal statement.
  2. Supporting Documents:
    * Proof of refugee status or documentation of
    socio-economic hardship.
    * School transcripts or equivalent academic records.
  3. Financial Assessment: Proof of financial need through income
    statements
    or affidavits.
  4. Interviews: Shortlisted candidates will undergo an interview to further
    assess their motivation and suitability for the scholarship.
  5. Recommendation Letters: At least one letter from a community leader,
    teacher, or social worker familiar with the applicant’s background and potential.
